The "stadsgewestelijk materieel" (SGM, translation : city-commuter rolling stock) was specially designed for travellers coming from the commuter belt into the big cities. With end-to-end journeys around 25-30km, and 2-2.5km between stations, the journey time needed to be kept as short as possible. This meant quick acceleration and excellent brakes. In the past, the difference between short-distance and long-distance routes never made a difference to the train design.
Also, the relatively short distances involved in any rail travel within the Netherlands never gave rise to make this distinction.
Because of rapid city expansion and massive moves to the commuter belt, a city commuter train was needed desperately. The older Plan-T and Plan-V trains weren't designed for so much stop-start running and their relative slowness meant they never got to full speed between stations. The Sprinter was a compromise between long-distance comfort, and short-distance necessity.

MSTS Version

The NS Sprinter is available in 3 colour schemes as part of the same download:
NS Sprinter This is the familiar yellow and blue colour scheme. Sprinters wearing these colours are seen all over the NS network. The advertising on the side of them varies. This one has the Delta Lloyd advert. NS Sprinter 2003 This Sprinter is coloured with the 2003 NS colours for their regional trains.
SprinterLiner This is the paint scheme for the proposed, but failed SprinterLiner service. The InterLiner bus company was going to operate Sprinters too, but the plan fell through.
