The all-double-deck interregiomaterieel (DD-IRM) is designed for passenger travel throughout the inter-regio network. The IRM rolling stock is made up of 34 3-car train sets (series 8200) and 47 4-car train sets (series 8400). All are full-length double-deck and with the help of scharfenberg-style couplers front and rear, can be combined to make train sets a maximum of 15 cars long. A train set consists of:

• two identical motor-cars (2nd class) each with automatic couplers and driven axles
• one or two carriages (1st and 2nd class) on trailing axles
