The motorposts used to be owned entirely by the PTT and were built as a cooperative project between the NS and Werkspoor Utrecht. Originally, all the mP's were painted in the reddish-brown colours. Later, the fronts of the noses were repainted yellow to make them more visible. After a big overhaul, all the mP's got painted in the red and yellow colours with "PTT Post" written down the sides. In 1989, after privatisation of the PTT, other paint schemes were tried out. The result was more variations on the all-red, and red-yellow schemes.
There are a number of non-PTT motorposts in service too:

• 3032 as Jules-2, belonging to Eurailscout, and renumbered 80 84 97 81 602"
• 3024, 3029, 3033 and 3034 as test trains for ERMTS (the new European safety system) for Alstom and Siemens
• 3027 and 3030 belonging to Railion, and hired out to NBM-Bam as sanding trains.
