The motorposts used to be owned entirely by the PTT and were built as a cooperative project between the NS and Werkspoor Utrecht. Originally, all the mP's were painted in the reddish-brown colours. Later, the fronts of the noses were repainted yellow to make them more visible. After a big overhaul, all the mP's got painted in the red and yellow colours with "PTT Post" written down the sides. In 1989, after privatisation of the PTT, other paint schemes were tried out. The result was more variations on the all-red, and red-yellow schemes.
