Between 1956 and 1962, there were a lot of 2- and 4-car Mat'54 units built. I don't know exactly how many, but if you have access to the dutch book 'Elektrische Treinen in Nederland deel 2', you can find out. They were built at the Beyens and Allen railyards. The electrical installation came from Heemaf, and at the time they were built, the Hondekops were the heaviest electric multiple units in Europe. Thanks to the unique shape of the nose of the train, the Mat'54 became known as the Hondekop - Doghead or Dognose. This nose design didn't come about simply for form, but for safety and function too. In the older electrical units, the driver was sat quite low to the tracks with a thin sheet of steel between him and the air outside. With the Hondekops, the driver was sat higher up and further back, with a large impact/crumple zone in front of him - the Dognose. Between 1993 and 1996, the Hondekops were all decomissioned and destroyed, all apart from one 2-car trainset, and one 4-car trainset, the 766 unit.
The NS Mat'54 is available in a nearly unbelievable 33 colour schemes as part of the same download. The index image is at the bottom of this page.
