In December, a special prototype wagon numbered 219 5 000 was put into service for the postal service. The wagon was needed because the PTT were looking at transporting ever-increasing amounts of mail by rail rather than by road.
For this specialist transport, a wagon was needed with a few specific capabilities. High towing speed and large loading volumes were needed, along with an easy way to load and unload the cargo. The PTT post containers are loaded and unloaded via a specially constructed door. The bottom half of the door drops down and the top half rolls up leaving a huge loading space.
The wagons were painted in PTT red with "PTT POST" on the sides of them.
